How do i get thicker hair?

I'm asian and i recently started caring about my looks. My hair is extremely thin. if you look at my head from any angle you can see my scalp and it looks bad. the hair on the sides of my head grow outwards and sticks out like.. a porcupine!?!? I want to grow my hair out longer and flat agisnt my head so i can style it. any tips or suggestions?
